The Bridge To Russia

Έχει γράψει όμως ένα καταπληκτικό τραγούδι με τίτλο "Goodnight Saigon" το οποίο περιλαμβάνεται σε φανταστική ζωντανή εκτέλεση στο νέο του album, "A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia".

Ήταν 1987 όταν ο Joel έκανε περιοδεία στην τότε Σοβιετική Ένωση, ένας από τους πρώτους Δυτικούς καλλιτέχνες που τόλμησε κάτι τέτοιο πριν από τη λήξη του Ψυχρού Πολέμου: Θέλει guts να κάνεις κάτι τέτοιο. Όπως επίσης θέλει guts, μπροστά σε ένα κοινό που βλέπει ροκ συναυλία για πρώτη φορά στη ζωή του, να αρχίσεις παίζοντας τόσο δυνατά που πλησιάζεις στα όρια του πόνου, ώστε να διώξεις από τη συναυλία τους Επισήμους, γραφειοκράτες του Κόμματος, που έχουν πιάσει τις πρώτες σειρές με τις στολές τους και τις κυρίες τους. Θέλει guts να παίξεις στη Μόσχα των 80's ένα τραγούδι σαν το "Allentown", προλογίζοντάς το με ένα μονόλογο γύρω από την κατεστραμμένη νεολαία "σε μια βιομηχανική πόλη της Αμερικής" που έχει υποστεί πλύση εγκεφάλου ώστε να υποφέρει σιωπηλά αναμένοντας ένα καλύτερο μέλλον που δεν έρχεται. Θέλει guts να κάνεις stage-dive σε ένα κοινό που δεν έχει ξαναδεί κάτι τέτοιο και δεν έχεις ιδέα αν θα σε πιάσει ή όχι. Θέλει guts να βγεις στο encore μόνος με μια ακουστική κιθάρα, εκεί, τότε, και να παίξεις το "The Times They Are-A-Changin'". Θέλει guts να παίξεις ένα τραγούδι για τον πιο πρόσφατο πόλεμο της χώρας σου μέσα στο σπίτι του "εχθρού". Ποιος είναι όμως ο εχθρός;

Πάρτε την deluxe έκδοση του "A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia".

We met as soul mates οn Parris Island
We left as inmates from an asylum
And we were sharp, as sharp as knives
And we were so gung-ho τo lay down our lives

We came in spastic, like tameless horses
We left in plastic as numbered corpses
And we learned fast to travel light
Our arms were heavy but our bellies were tight

We had no home front, we had no soft soap
They sent us Playboy, they gave us Bob Hope
We dug in deep and shot on sight
And prayed to Jesus Christ with all of our might

We had no cameras to shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe and played our Doors tapes
And it was dark, so dark at night
And we held on to each other. like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write

And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

Remember Charlie, remember Baker
They left their childhood on every acre
And who was wrong? And who was right?
It didn't matter in the thick of the fight

We held the day in the palm of our hand
They ruled the night
And the night seemed to last as long as six weeks
On Parris Island

We held the coastline, they held the highlands
And they were sharp, as sharp as knives
They heard the hum of our motors, they counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive

And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

Attention Deficit Disorder Record Reviews Part II – May 2014

The Metal:

AGALLOCH – The Serpent & the Sphere
Listening to this makes me want to slit my wrists. Which is a good thing, because listening to almost every other folky doom/black metal band makes me want to slit the band members’ wrists. (7)

CROWBAR – Symmetry In Black
Great riffs as always. Can’t stand the big dude’s vocals as always. (7)

DEAD CONGREGATION – Promulgation Of The Fall
Sort of like getting your face kicked in by a professional football player wearing steel-toe boots. But in a good way. (7)

DOWN – IV Part II
Down raised the bar so impossibly high with the first two (some will say three) albums, that now even a perfectly good Down record is not good enough. (7)

EYEHATEGOD – Eyehategod
2014: Eyehategod > Crowbar ≥ Down. (8)

KILLER BE KILLED – Killer Be Killed
Given that it’s a supergroup featuring guys from Soulfly, Mastodon, Dillinger etc. and that as a general rule supergroups usually suck donkey cock, this is pretty fucking good. It’s heavy, it’s catchy, it’s fun. (8)

MISERY INDEX – The Killing Gods
Death metal with lots of groove plus a bit of Slayer and a bit of Slipknot thrown in for good measure. Cool. (7)

VALLENFYRE – Splinters
Sounds like Hellhammer if the latter could actually play. (7)

The Rest:

BEN FROST – A U R O R A
You don’t listen to this for enjoyment, you listen to this to be hip and smart. Look at me, I’m hip and smart. (7)

BILLY JOEL – A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia – The Music
A truly great live album revisiting Joel’s seminal 1987 USSR tour. Quite frankly I’d rather listen to this than to Ben Frost. (10)

JOLIE HOLLAND – Wine Dark Sea
Her voice sounds a bit like Bessie Smith or Billie Holiday, her songs sound a bit like weird Van Morrison or straight Tom Waits. Nice. (7)

KING DUDE – Fear
“American gothic” vibe and a baritone voice singing songs about the Devil over punked-up rockabilly guitars. Looks better in writing than it actually sounds. (6)

SARAH McLACHLAN – Shine On
No masterpiece of “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy”-like proportions, but still a good collection of radio friendly “adult pop” tunes. And Sarah, those “ooh-ooh-ooh” vocals on “Love Beside Me”? I love you for that. (7)

SHARON VAN ETTEN – Are We There
Not bad for a hipster-friendly version of Sarah McLachlan. (7)

STURGILL SIMPSON – Metamodern Sounds In Country Music
You’ll have a hard time finding a better country record to listen to this year. And the occasional trip into psychedelic country rock is pretty amazing. (9)

THE BLACK KEYS – Turn Blue
So these guys are big now. They sound bigger too, basically they’ve moved into classic rock territory. (7)

Don't Dream It's Over

Η κυρία που ήταν πίσω μου με τον άνδρα της και την κόρη της ανταποκρίθηκε στο κάλεσμα του Finn "Now sing the harmony!" πιάνοντας τόσο ΑΨΟΓΑ τη δεύτερη φωνή στο "History Never Repeats" που αυθόρμητα γύρισα, της έκανα thumbs up και αναφώνησα "that was great!" Ένας πανύψηλος πενηντάρης αγκάλιασε τη σύντροφό του μόλις τελείωσε το "Don't Dream It's Over" και τη φίλησε τρυφερά.

Girls and Guitars

Look at this picture. Just look at it. Isn’t it beautiful?

Everything about this picture is perfect. Joan Jett and Lita Ford are 19 and playing rock stars, a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy in this case. They are determined. They are gorgeous. They are badass.

Look at their faces, they mean it, they feel it. Look at their fingers, they can play it. Look at the Rock Goddess poses and the catsuits. Oh my, the catsuits.

They say that youth is wasted on the young, but you can only pull this sort of shit off when you’re a fearless 19-year old. No waste here, I could look at this picture all day long.

When I was 19, all I ever thought about was girls and guitars.

Attention Deficit Disorder Record Reviews – May 2014

ADMIRAL SIR CLOUDESLEY SHOVELL – Check ‘Em Before You Wreck ‘Em
Uglier in a catsuit than the rest of Rise Above’s roster, not metal but definitely heavy, downright nasty sounding. Fun! (8)

BRODY DALLE – Diploid Love
A welcome return for our favorite punk rock mom, but the occasional drum machine and mariachi brass take some of the bite off. “Don’t Mess With Me” sounds just like her hubby jamming with NIN. (7)

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – American Beauty EP
He’s The Boss. Even when not in top form he gets an easy seven. (7)

CARLENE CARTER – Carter Girl
Just like Rosanne Cash, Carlene made a fantastic country album in 2014 so there’s definitely something to be said for growing up in the Johnny Cash/June Carter household. BE WARNED: On a couple of tracks she sounds exactly like Nashville’s answer to Vicky Leandros. (8)

CHUCK E. WEISS – Red Beans & Weiss
You’ve got to like Chuck E. I mean, how can you not like him, he’s like Tom Waits’ wisecracking surrealist older brother. If he was a movie he’d be “The Big Lebowski” as done by the Marx Brothers. (7)

CIRCLE – Leviatan
Listening to this makes me want to smash an acoustic guitar on someone’s head and then shove a dozen drum brushes up his ass while screaming obscenities at him in a strange Scandinavian language. (5)

FU MANCHU – Gigantoid
Last time I played anything like this I was in a 90’s dorm room rolling a blunt, I accidentally spilled the dimebag contents and then spent the next two years on my knees trying to pick the damn stuff out of the carpet. (7)

FUTURE – Honest
Hyped-up hip-hop guy with plenty of skills, famous guests, and that really annoying Kanye auto-tune voice thing. (7)

GARBAGE & BRODY DALLE – Girls Talk
Not only is Shirley Manson beginning to look worryingly like Marilyn Manson, but the A side of this 7-inch is dark and hard and grungy and almost industrial and kicks some serious ass too. (8)

JACK BRUCE – Silver Rails
Claims he was influenced by Earth on this album, his voice suggests he just crawled out of it. He can still come up with a decent blues tune though. (6)

PARKER MILLSAP – Parker Millsap
Sometimes sounds like a trailer-park redneck Jeff Buckley. This is a good thing. Great, in fact. Fantastic. (9)

PLANET OF ZEUS – Vigilante
Last time I played anything like this I was in a 90’s dorm room rolling a blunt… Oh wait, you’ve heard this one before? (7)

RODNEY CROWELL – Tarpaper Sky
What I love about great country music: No gimmicks, just songs. Real ones. And no god-awful band names. I’ll take Rodney Crowell over indie rock hipster charlatans anyday. (8)

SWANS – To Be Kind
Definitely not for people with Attention Deficit Disorder. Give me a couple of months to digest and I’ll get back to you. (∞)

THE EXPLOSION – Red Tape EP
What else is there to say, this 3-song EP is 8 minutes of punk rock perfection. (10)

WOVENHAND – Refractory Obdurate
Maybe he’s a fun guy, I don’t know. But he still sounds like he hasn’t had a laugh in the last thousand years. (7)
